Definition & Overview
The Interview-Informed Synthesized Contingency Analysis (IISCA) is a functional assessment approach that begins with an open-ended interview with caregivers, teachers, or the individual, followed by a synthesized test condition in which multiple antecedents and consequences (reinforcers) identified via the interview are combined and tested simultaneously (Hanley, Jin, Vanselow & Hanratty, 2014). The method is sometimes nicknamed the “My Way” assessment, reflecting its client-collaborative and individualized design — the assessment effectively asks, “Here’s what you report; let’s test it your way.”
Examples:
-
After a caregiver interview, a test condition is arranged combining escape from work, access to preferred items, and attention contingencies—matching the contexts described in the interview.
-
A control condition then presents none of those motivating conditions (relevant antecedents absent, reinforcers removed) to compare rates of problem behavior.
-
The differentiated outcome guides design of treatment (skill-building) that aligns with the identified maintained function. (Coffey et al., 2019) PMC+1
Why It Matters
Why This Matters in Life:
For families and individuals, IISCA offers a way to view problem behavior not as misbehavior but as meaningful communication of needs — and the assessment is tailored to the person’s own context (“their way”). This enhances trust, respect, and collaboration.
Why This Matters in ABA:
IISCA reflects the shift in ABA toward more efficient, socially valid, client-centered practices. By synthesizing contingencies and beginning with client/caregiver input, it aligns with 3rd-wave ABA and trauma-informed approaches that emphasize dignity, efficacy, and practical relevance (Coffey et al., 2019; Layman et al., 2023) practicalfunctionalassessment.com+1
RBT / Behavior Technician Perspective
Role:
-
Assist in data collection during the IISCA process (test and control conditions).
-
Observe accurately and report antecedents, behaviors, and consequences.
-
Implement intervention plans derived from the IISCA with fidelity under supervision.
Exam Relevance:
-
Found in the RBT Task List under Behavior Reduction and Assessment & Data Collection domains.

Pros / Cons:
✔ Pros: Enables more efficient and contextually accurate assessments; connects directly to practical interventions.
✖ Cons: Requires high accuracy in data collection; misidentification of function can lead to less effective or mis-matched interventions.
BCaBA / BCBA Perspective
Role:
-
Design and oversee the IISCA process: interview, hypothesis generation, test/control condition setup, data interpretation.
-
Use IISCA results to design function-based treatment plans, supervise implementation, evaluate outcomes.
Exam Relevance:
-
Included in BCaBA/BCBA Task Lists under Behavior Assessment, Behavior Reduction, and Ethical Practice.

Pros / Cons:
✔ Pros: High social validity, efficient use of resources, better ecological fit for interventions.
✖ Cons: Some research still debates isolated vs. synthesized contingencies; supervision and training essential to ensure integrity. (Greer et al., 2019) PMC
BCBA Intern / Graduate Student Perspective
Role:
-
Observe and assist in conducting IISCA assessments under supervision.
-
Learn to interpret synthesized contingency data and contribute to treatment planning.
-
Support implementation and data collection of corresponding function-based treatments.
Exam Relevance:
-
Part of BCBA exam content: assessment methods, intervention design, ethics, and supervision.
Study Resources:
-
Graduate coursework in behavior analysis and assessment.
-

-

Pros / Cons:
✔ Pros: Enhances analytic skills, connects assessment to practice, builds competency in advanced ABA methods.
✖ Cons: Requires close supervision; complexity of synthesized contingencies may be challenging without prior experience.
Caregiver Perspective
Role / Awareness:
-
Participate in the initial interview, providing context about antecedents, preferred items/activities, and consequences.
-
Support treatment plans derived from IISCA by maintaining consistency across settings (home, community).
-
Observe changes in behavior and communicate with the treatment team about relevance and real-world fit.
Pros / Cons:
✔ Pros: Increases collaboration, enhances treatment relevance, promotes generalization in natural settings.
✖ Cons: Requires careful explanation so caregivers understand that assessment results are hypotheses to guide treatment, not “blame” for the caregiver.

Ethical & Compassionate Considerations
IISCA is consistent with contemporary ethical practice by emphasizing minimal client exposure to aversive events, efficient assessment, and interventions that respect the client’s context. Some literature raises caution about synthesized analyses possibly producing false positives or less precision than isolated variable analyses (Greer et al., 2019). PMC
When implemented ethically:
-
The open-ended interview promotes client/caregiver voice and choice.
-
The synthesized test condition reflects real-life contingencies rather than artificial manipulations.
-
Intervention plans based on IISCA lead to function-based treatments that support autonomy, dignity, and socially significant outcomes — aligning with the BACB Ethics Code (2022) standards of social validity and client welfare.
In Summary
The IISCA (“My Way” assessment) offers a powerful, efficient, and individualized method for identifying the function of problem behavior by beginning with what matters to the client and caregiver. When correctly conducted and followed by function-based intervention, it supports effective, socially valid treatment and aligns with compassionate, modern ABA practice.
